Title
Nederlands: De Liefde bij Annobon
English: De Liefde at Annobon
Description
English: Picture of the fleet: from left to right the ships De Liefde, Geloof, Hoop, Trouw and Blijde Boodschap. When the fleet became increasingly hard-pressed for food and many people on board became sick, the commanders decided to deviate from their course and sail to Annobon, an island off the West African coast. The inhabitants of the Portuguese post on the island did not trust the Dutch and tried to prevent them from going ashore. The Dutch then stormed the island, whereupon the Potuguese and their native allies set fire to their own houses and fled into the hills. The Dutch stayed on the island for a month and then resumed their voyage to the Strait of Magelhaen.
