Nederlands: De Kramp, een lusvormig zoetwaterschor op de linkeroever van de Schelde. Deze prachtige meander kronkelt binnen de grote meander tussen Baasrode en Dendermonde. De Kramp is sinds 1997 een natuurreservaat. Aan de overkant van de Schelde volgt de Sigmadijk de meanderlus niet en isoleert het natuurgebied effectief van de achterliggende polder. De Kramp is een hindernis voor de binnenscheepvaart. Schepen naar Gent hebben een maximale tonnenmaat van 1350 ton en de grotere schepen die elkaar moeten kruisen, dienen af te spreken wie voorrang heeft. Er wordt in de meander niet gebaggerd, waardoor de onstabiele zandbanken zich verder uitbreiden en tot 10 meter diep in de Schelde gaan.
English: The 'Kramp' is a freshwater marsh in a loop of the river Scheldt within the large meander between Baasrode and Dendermonde. The 'Kramp' is a nature reserve since 1997. Across the river Scheldt the Sigma Dyke does not follow the meander and isolates the 'Kramp' from the underlying polder. This meander is a hindrance to the inland navigation: to cross each other ships must agree on who has priority. The meander is not dredged, thus the unstable sand banks are expanding up to 10 meters into the Scheldt. |
