Built in 1948 as a standard Chipmunk with the Canadian military serial 18001. Delivered to the Canadian Joint Air Training Centre at Rivers Camp, Manitoba, on 10th April 1948 and operated by 444 (AOP) Squadron. It was sold off in 1959 and became N13Y on the US civil register. It was bought by Art Scholl in 1968 and heavily modified with a Lycoming engine, shorter wingspan, no flaps and a retractable undercarriage. Now a single-seater and unofficially known as the ‘Super Chipmunk’, it was flown at airshows and events until 1985, when Scholl was killed in a Pitts Special while filming for the movie ‘Top Gun’. Donated to the Smithsonian Institute by his estate in 1987, the ‘Super Chipmunk’ is seen on display at the Steven F. Udvar Hazy Center as part of the National Air and Space Museum.
