8.1.13 | Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn Public Advocate Bill de Blasio joined community activists, doctors, nurses and health care workers at Interfaith Medical Center to protest the facility’s imminent shutdown, and announce new steps to help the hospital restructure and preserve vital health care for the surrounding neighborhoods. The rally followed yesterday’s announcement that Interfaith will begin shutting down operations in mid-August and will be completely shuttered by the fall. De Blasio pledged to keep all actions on the table, including legal action, to keep the community hospital’s doors open. In a letter sent today, de Blasio urged “Interfaith’s board can and must revise the restructuring plan in order to gain Department of Health approval.” He called on the Health Department to come back to the table to facilitate that restructuring, and dedicate sufficient state funding to study a merger that could save the vital hospital. The state’s own 2011 New York State Medicaid Redesign Team called for the hospital to be restructured along these lines—not sent into a free-fall bankruptcy that hollowed out community health care. |
