Description
English:
Felsőváros Sacred Heart church. Built/remodelled in 1947. 18th century facade. Its tower built in 1824. Listed church. Local grade listed plaques on its facade to the 20th Infantry Regiment plaque (1924) to 48th Infantry Regiment, plaque (1996) to 17th, 47th Infantry Regiment, 9th Artillery Regiment. Stained glass windows by József Palka workshop are 1941 works. History: In the 1730s, a wooden chapel already existed here. - In 1764 a small Baroque cemetery chapel was built here dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk, which was maintained by the Piarists. At that time, here, east of today's church, was the city's cemetery. In 1778 it had three bells. In 1784, the city council banned further use of the church cemetery. In 1815 Károly Bankó painted three altarpieces for this church. In 1816, it did not yet have a tower, the three bells weighed 184, 57 and 44 kilograms (The belfrys stood on the east side of the square). In 1824 (the cemetery chapel had lost its original function) the city had it significantly enlarged and a two-storey tower built to it. The eastern half of the chapel was not affected by the expansion. On the other side, the wall shifted about 10 meters further west. Thus, the entrance to the church, which is still used today, was formed. The four bells that the church had at that time could be placed in the completed tower. Pipe organ built in 1844 (or before). Madonnana and Child painting by high school art teacher Elek Pfeiffer (1917) Currently, there are three bells in the tower: the soul bell (1902), and two of those cast in 1925 (László Szlezák). One of them is the 600 kg St. Stephen's big bell, the other is the St. Joseph bell. The renovation in 1923 was carried out by Vince Homonnay, church painter and builder from Veszprém. In 1927, a new Angster company organ was added. In 1941 and 1942, after the demolition of the 18th-century nave parts, a larger, modern part was added to the 19th-century tower and nave detail. The expansion was carried out according to the plans of István Kiss, military engineer of Szombathely. The new benches (with 320 seats) and the oak covering of the sacristy were made by János Buday. József Kovács stonemason created the marble surfaces and the stoups. - Church history plaque: ~"Uppertown church is a listed building.
