Then on the distant sea-coast wecan make out Astura, Nettuno, Antium (Porto dAnzio),Ardea, Pratica, Ostia, Porto, and Fiumicino. On theVolscian hills are Monte Fortino, CoUe Ferro and Signia(Segni); on the Hernicans, Anagni, Ferentino, Paliano,Genazzano, and Cavi, and the fore-ground is formed by theCyclopean walls of Prseneste ! Looking down upon all thesescenes, girt by the huge polygonal stones of the walls of theancient citadel, is the modern village of San Pietro, a placeso dilapidated and crumbling, so bare and colourless, that itlooks as if it had been transported from Africa to this windyheight. Here the Roman Catholic Church believes that St.Peter dwelt for some time, and here, in the church, he iscommemorated in a statue by Bernini, as well as in a goodpicture representing his martyrdom by Pietro di Cortona.The holy water basons are supported by ancient cippi.

Colonna Castle, Palestrina. Still higher, on the last peak, stand the huge ruins of thefortress, rebuilt by the famous Stephen Colonna, which bears POMTE S. ANTONIO. 281 over its gate, beneath the Colonna arms, the inscription, Magnificus DNS Stefan de Columna-redificavit civitatempenestre cv monte et arce. Anno 1332. In summer the stagnation of Palestrina is enlivened by thepresence of the Barberini family, who live, not at the palacewith the mosaic, but at another lower down in the town,quite in a feudal manner, and, as Prince and Princess ofPalestrina, hold receptions in their garden, to which all thesmall gentry of the place are invited. The Ponte S. Atiionio may be visited from Palestrina. Itis a magnificent Roman arch 120 feet in height, not far fromPoli, by which the Aqua Claudia and the Anio Novus werecarried across a deep ravine in the Campagna, CHAPTER XVIII.
