Text Appearing Before Image:
ic Syrup, Buchans Hun-garian Balsam of Life, Dr. Warrens Sarsa-parilla, Tomato and Wild Cherry, and hordesof others of a similar nature. Much advertising was inserted into the newscolumns in such form that the reader could notrecognize it as such until he had read well into it.The Boston Courier, in 1847, besides an accountof General Scotts advance on Vera Cruz, and inprecisely the same kind of type, under the head-ing Gourands Lectures on Chemistry, setforth this information: Another wonderful effectof chemical combination may thus be illustrated.Mix in a glass equal quantities of a saturatedsolution of Carbonate of Potash and a saturatedsolution of Muriate of Lime. Stir the mixtureand it will instantly become a solid. Whenchemistry can produce such wonders, it is not atall surprising that Gourands Italian MedicatedSoap should be invested with the power of remov-ing Pimples, Tan, Freckles, etc. This attempt of advertisers to confuse thereader was aided by playing with the headings.78
Text Appearing After Image:
Advertising in 1847-1 914 When some event was given special prominencein the news, the advertisers used the same heading. For example, on January 2, 1863, the BostonHerald printed Lincolns Emancipation Pro-clamation under the word, in large type, Pro-clamation. 1 On the same and the adjacent page,a dozen advertisements appeared under Pro-clamation set up in precisely the same way. The lack of classification of the newspaperadvertisements in 1847 presents the amusingside of the subject. All the Boston dailies atthat period had columns with headings To Let,Auctions, and Board and Rooms. Butregardless of fitness, the majority were lumpedtogether, apparently in the order in which theyhad been received. On opening at random thefiles of an 1847 newspaper the following adver-tisements appear printed in order in the samecolumn:—To let in Temple St. a three storybrick house; Bears Oil at 12§ cents a bottle;S. L. Bedel would inform her friends that shewill this day open at 154 Washington St.
