Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Royal Scots in No Man's Land, France, during World War I. This photograph shows a party of soldiers from the Royal Scots Regiment creeping along between a field and a hedge. The caption indicates they were advancing in 'No Man's Land', the ground between the Allied and German front line trenches.

The Royal Scots (The Royal Regiment) is Britain's oldest regiment, raised in 1633. It increased to 35 battalions during World War I, fighting in many areas and suffering great losses.
[Original reads: 'OFFICIAL PHOTOGRAPH TAKEN ON THE BRITISH WESTERN FRONT IN FRANCE. A Daylight reconnaissance. A party of Royal Scots creeping along a hedge in No Man's Land. This is a phase of open warfare.']
