Plaster Cast of a Woman from Pompeii

This exhibit is displayed as a part of the 'Disasters' case in the Manchester Museum's Living Worlds gallery.

We live on a violent planet.

Natural disasters kill thousands of people each year.

The towns of Pompeii and Herculaneum were close to the volcano Vesuvius around 2,000 years ago. In AD 79 Mount Vesuvius erupted, sending clouds of ash and gas (pyroclastic flows) over the towns, covering both towns with a thick layer of ash. Only about 4.5% of the people who died in the eruption were killed by the ash fall. The rest appear to have been suffocated by a mix of hot ash and gas.

The shapes of the bodies of the people and animals who died were preserved as cavities in the ash. Archaeologists discovered these empty cavities during the 19th century, filled them with plaster and excavated the plaster casts. These were reproduced many times, this exhibit is just one example.

Scientists think Mount Vesuvius could erupt again soon and could devastate the nearby city of Naples.
