Rocks and Minerals

The Manchester Museum rock and mineral collections are one of the finest in the country. In total, there are about 22,000 mineral specimens and 15,000 rocks. Spectacular examples are on display.

Rocks are made up of grains of minerals, naturally occurring geological substances with a definite composition and crystal structure. The study of mineralogy is really only chemistry and physics of natural materials.

These samples are in the case that shows how natural geological processes can alter minerals and rocks.

Water is a good solvent. Hot water trapped in rocks deep beneath the Earth can dissolve minerals that are not significantly soluble at the surface. As solutions escape along faults into rocks where the temperature is lower, minerals crystallise as their limits of solubility are exceeded. Metals can be concentrated into ore deposits in this way.
