Description

TWO Wolverhampton school girls have received an award after they helped police catch and convict two lads who carried out a violent attempted robbery on a bus.

Niamh O’Connor and Chloe Mai Brown, both aged 13 at the time, were presented with Chief Constable Young Persons Awards at a special ceremony, following their public spirited actions.

The teenagers were travelling on a bus in July 2012, when they witnessed an attempted robbery, where two fifteen year old boys were assaulted after being followed onto the bus by two youths.

The offenders confronted the boys, pushing one and grabbing him around the neck, before punching him in the face and searching him. The second victim was punched in the stomach and searched.

After getting off the bus, the girls found a police car which was parked outside one of the victim’s houses, knocked on the door and gave information to the officers about what they had seen.

As a result of their evidence and witness statements, the police arrested two teenagers for attempted robbery and they were later convicted at court.

DC Kirsty Oldfield, from Wolverhampton CID, said: "The girls went out of their way to find the police and offer to help despite this being a violent and distressing thing to watch and go through.

"The girls and their families have been fully supportive of the investigation and court process and if it wasn’t for their evidence adding such strength to this case, then this may not have been such a success and the offenders may have gone on to hurt and rob other innocent victims."

Niamh and Chloe from the Aldersley area of Wolverhampton were presented with their awards by Deputy Chief Constable Dave Thompson at a ceremony at Tally Ho! on Thursday 25 July.
