Description

Ancient Greek Thymiaterion (Acc. 37325)

This is a thymiaterion or incense burner from Apulia, Italy. It measures 28.1cm and has a diameter of 15cm. It is made from red clay, and has a hollow stem. It is decorated with red figures on a black background. The moulding below bowl is decorated with hook motif, then rosettes, then a wide black band with vertical rays in white paint on narrow part of shaft. The moulding below this has hooks. On the lower shaft, the obverse has female head between wings, and the reverse shows a palmette. And there are hooks on the foot.

The source of this artifact is unknown, but it is presumed to be either from Mr Darbyshire or Sir J. Lee, 1894. It was transferred from Whitworth Art Gallery in 1967.

Archaeologists suspected this this was a forgery made of two pieces from different pots. A complete item would be more valuable to collectors. To find out whether this had happened, a non-destructive technique called Synchrotron X-ray Powder Diffraction (SR-XRD) was used to examine what different parts of the vessel were made from. This showed that the clays from the two pieces are practically identical and the incense burner is not a forgery.
