[edit]DescriptionDay 11 - Andesite Porphyry Stone Bowl (8175061796).jpg |
Andesite Porphyry Stone Bowl (Acc. 1776) Very hard stones, often with distinctive patterning such as Andesite, were common materials for vessels in the Predynastic and Early Dynastic Periods. This is a large, round-bodied vase with flat rim and tubular handles, made of a hard black stone with white inclusions, possibly syenite or a type of porphyry. It measures 56.5cm, with a diameter of 61.5cm This vessel's size and weight make it impractical for for transporting goods, but it could have been used for storage. Such a large stone object was a status symbol, showing that the owner had access to expensive materials. This artifact is dated to the Egyptian Predynastic (Naqada III) Period, or Dynasty I. It was discovered in Hierakonpolis (Kom el-Ahmar) in Upper Egypt, and was donated to the Manchester Museum in 1898 by the Egyptian Research Account. |
