Summary
[edit]DescriptionDay-of-the-Dead Bread (Ecuador).jpg |
English: In Ecuador, the Day of the Dead has a traditional bread, shown above, in addition to the traditional beverage, colada morada, discussed earlier in this photostream.
According to the information sheet from our hotel, Café Cultura, this bread is called "guaguas de pan," which translates as "bread bablies." "Guagua" is Quechua for "baby." This bread is baked only during the period leading up to the Day of the Dead. What I didn't ascertain is why babies would be associated with the Day of the Dead. My wild guess is the guaguas de pan represent souls waiting to be born. There may also be some tie-in with the symbolism of the rite of holy communion. |
