But if Members attended totheir duties there would be no occasion for the Pressto interfere. But whether they like such criticismor not they have to submit to it, so long as it is madein the public interest. Public criticism of publicmen is now a recognized function of the Press. As 3i4 DAVID SYME long as this criticism is exercised in the public interestthe Press is unassailable, and members must listenwith the best grace they can. And the Press claimsto be free only on this condition, and in this respectit claims no more than the humblest individualpossesses. The Press has no licence to slander withimpunity. An ill-conditioned member may slandera private individual within the walls of Parliamentand refuse him any redress, but a newspaper has nosuch privilege, and if it makes a charge which it failsto sustain it must pay the penalty.

ffl CHAPTER XVII Death and Appreciations The news of Symes death in his eighty-first year,which occurred on February 14, 1908 at his home atBlythewood, Kew, near Melbourne (to which he hadfor some time been confined through heart anddigestive troubles) was received throughout theCommonwealth with an almost universal expressionof public grief. In the week that followed everyjournal of note in the Commonwealth paid him thetribute of a leading article, praising his works andlamenting his departure; and in Victoria manyleading politicians and statesmen and innumerablemunicipalities, shire councils, Progress Associations,Rifle Clubs, Societies and other public bodies, madepublic confession of his incomparable services to theState. The appreciations published in the Australiannewspapers would fill a large volume. I have spaceonly sufficient at my disposal to quote a few repre-sentative opinions. The Argusâthe Free Trade, Conservative rivalin Melbourne and ancient enemy of The Age said :â
