English: Half-length portrait of captain of artillery, cradling a saber, with hat next to him on a table. "1836. David Murphy 1916 Came to St. Louis, 1858. Colonel of 50th Mo. Regt. Established Franklin Co. Observer, 1867. Judge of St Louis Criminal Court, 1894-98. Gift of his Wife, Mrs. Mary Murphy." (written on paper and adhered below image).
David Murphy enlisted as a 1st Lt in April 1861 and was wounded at the Battle of Wilson's Creek (Springfield) on Aug 10, 1861. He was transferred to Co. I, 1st Artillery under Capt. Tannrath in Sept. 1861 and promoted to captain and given command of Co. F, 1st Artillery Regiment (digital soldier records). Murphy was promoted to major in March 1863 and is also listed as being the Colonel of the 50th Missouri Volunteer Regiment.
