Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Constructed in 1853 and expanded in 1891, this house at 423 North Carroll Street in Madison, Wisconsin, was originally built for David Johnson, who lived in the Italianate-style portion of the house now at the northwest (see the Property Record online). This was extended to the southeast in 1891 with a new Queen Anne-style wing featuring a front tower.

The original portion of the house has a painted sandstone exterior with a low-slope hipped roof, windows with decorative stone headers and stone sills, and an off-center front door. The addition features a painted brick exterior, a stone base, a two-story bay window with a hipped roof, stone lintels and sills, and a rear gable roof. The house also features eaves with exposed rafter tails, a front porch with clustered slender columns and a cornice with details, and multiple hipped dormers.

The house is a contributing structure in the Mansion Hill Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
