Summary
[edit]DescriptionDas Gebiet Noctis Labyrinthus (53484622598).jpg |

It marks the transition between the Tharsis bulge with its large volcanoes to the west (except Ascraeus Moon to the northwest on this map out of view) and the tectonic rift valley of the Valles Marineris, the "Valleys of Mariner". These are named after the Mariner 9 space probe, which first photographed the 4,000 kilometer long structure in 1971. The intricate pattern of the “Labyrinth of Night” was also created by tectonic extensional fractures in the Martian crust. The mosaic underlying the images shown here was calculated from eight individual HRSC image strips. Credit: NASA/JPL/USGS; FU Berlin CCBY-SA 3.0 IGO |
