Animal characteristics: Identification: The breeding Darwin ground finch has a black bill, while the nonbreeding finch has a yellow bill. The male is black, and the female is streaked brown; Diet: Omnivore: seeds, insects; Reproduction: After laying 2-4 eggs, the female incubates them for two weeks. The male then incubates the eggs for two weeks while the female leaves and finds another mate; Status: Varies by species - some highly endangered; Interesting Facts: Ground finches were made famous by Darwin's theory of evolution of beak size. There are four species of ground finch.
