Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Dartmoor: The Scotch Sheepfold The rectangular enclosure on the south-western slopes of Stannon Tor was originally built in the early 19th century by two brothers, John and Thomas Hullett, as a factory to extract starch from potatoes grown in the vicinity. However the enterprise was uneconomic and the factory was destroyed in a fire. The enclosure was then converted to a sheepfold. The origin of the name Scotch Sheepfold may be because a Scottish person used it or may be because it was where sheep imported from Scotland were first impounded.

Whatever its history the sheepfold still merits its own identification on the Ordnance Survey's 1:50,000 scale map.

Stannon Tor itself is on the ridge behind and is in SX6491.
