Notes York School (1785-1814) was the forerunner of the Mount School, York, which opened in 1831, and is still currently operated by the Society of Friends. The schools were established in response to the educational and religious needs of less fortunate children. A “guarded education” was stressed in the school’s prospectus, and the girls were taught “accomplishments”, including sampler making. Recognisable features of Quaker samplers include the bold use of Roman script, specific patterns, and darning techniques. The ability to maintain a household’s linen was of practical benefit, and a sampler of darning was both a record of patterns and techniques and a diploma of accomplishment.
