Darkling beetle in New Mexico, USA. (August 2007) (photo by Mary Ellen St. John) This darkling beetle is moving over a substrate composed of gypsum sand, which is a rare sediment mineralogy. The gypsum forms by evaporation of playa lakes in a southern New Mexico valley. White Sands National Monument is a large gypsum dune field immediately downwind of the lakes.
