Croz now and then turnedround to help Mr. Hadow, who was the least experiencedof the party, the guide assisting him to plant his feetfirmly in the steps, laying aside for the moment his ownaxe in order thus to be of service. For a fewseconds we saw our unfortunate companions sliding down-wards on their backs, and spreading out their hands, endeavouring to save themselves. They passed from oursight uninjured, disappeared one by one, and fell fromprecipice to precipice on to the Matterhorngletscherbelow, a distance of nearly four thousand feet in height. From the moment the rope broke it was impossible to helpthem. So perished our comrades ! Who can picture the position and think the thoughts ofth
