Description
English: There are three versions of this drawing. Of the other two, one is slightly larger and is without the vase and the book on the table (Surtees, no. 10) and the other has background details (illustrated in Marillier, p. 214).
This is a very early illustration to the poem, The Tales of Sorrentino, the subject of which was the interference of the devil in the course of true love and is dated to 1843 as it is mentioned in a letter to the artist's mother. The poem is now missing and is presumed lost following objections to it by Rossetti's sisters.
