here she must preparetheir frugal meals. In a little while Greyfoot wentout, and returned with an old spinning-wheel and alarge bundle of tow, of the meanest quality. Whileyou work with this, he said, I must try to findsome occupation, as best I can. Neither of us canafford to be idle. Thus time passed slowly and quietly. Greyfoothad secured work at the palace as a wood-cutter,and returned every evening with a loaf of breadand a few pennies. His wife was spinning until herfinger-tips were scorched, and her knees shakingunder her. One evening Greyfoot brought home awheelbarrow filled with earthen-ware. This he hadbought on credit, he said, and she was in dutybound to go to town the next day and sell thethings. She of course made no objections. Thenext day Greyfoot went to his work, as usual, andhis wife set out for the town with her earthen-ware.But when she had just managed to sell a few ofthem, a troop of stately knights came gallopingdown the street. The riders pursued theirway ; hut the poor princess returned to the hut,and, sitting down, wept bitterly. In the evening, when Greyfoot returned, shetold him of her misfortune. Now we are utterlyunfortunate, said he, for I have no money withwhich to pay for these articles. You will now haveto sew a wallet, go from door to door, and beg forvictuals and pennies, until our debts have beenpaid. The princess did as he bid her, and was gladthat her husband did not scold her for her ill fort-une She begged at every ones door, bringinghome, at length, several pieces of bread and somepennies. That will not bring us very far, said Greyfoot,when the princess had displayed the contents ofthe wallet. I have now found a good place foryou at the palace. They are preparing for a wed-ding, and to morrow you are to lend a hand in tin-kitchen. Do your best and make yours
