As the boilingdid not cease at once, the first thing which Christo-pher caught sight of when he drove into the yardwas this pot, which seemed to boil without fire orspark, standing on the cold stone. He at once for-got the sheep-painter and his own thoughts ofrevenge. Such a pot must be a great marvel. Be-fore he drove out of the yard again he had boughtit for fifty dollars. This time he felt sure thecunning Hilltown man could not deceive him, for 216
