[edit]Daniel Van Winkle, Distinguished Citizen, Dies. Daniel Van Winkle, Jersey City's most distinguished citizen, is dead at the age of 95 years. Mr. Van Winkle came of the old Dutch stock and settled that part of Jersey City now known as the Bergen section, and of that old stock, none was more highly respected and esteemed than the Van Winkle stock. Mr. Van Winkle also enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest alumnus of Rutgers University, from which he was graduated in 1858. Through many years he was a man of letters, although originally he started out to become a lawyer, which profession he did not follow after being admitted to the bar. Upon retiring from the publishing business in New York, he was spared to enjoy many years of happiness in the city he loved so dearly. He outlived practically all of his contemporary friendships, but even in apparent loneliness he refused to be lonely. A grand old gentleman has passed on - Hudson Despatch.

This work is in the public domain because it was published in the United States between 1929 and 1963, and although there may or may not have been a copyright notice, the copyright was not renewed. For further explanation, see Commons:Hirtle chart and the copyright renewal logs.
Note that it may still be copyrighted in jurisdictions that do not apply the rule of the shorter term for US works (depending on the date of the author's death), such as Canada (70 years p.m.a.), Mainland China (50 years p.m.a., not Hong Kong or Macao), Germany (70 years p.m.a.), Mexico (100 years p.m.a.), Switzerland (70 years p.m.a.), and other countries with individual treaties.
Works copyrighted before 1964 had to have the copyright renewed sometime in the 28th year. If the copyright was not renewed, the work is in the public domain. No renewal notice was found for this periodical for issues published in this year. For instance, the first New York Times issue renewed was from April 1, 1928. Some publications may have renewed an individual article from an earlier time. If you find any contrary evidence or the database has been updated, notify me.
