e his wife. He m. 12 Nov.1865, Mrs. Precious (Starr) Caton, b. in Licking County,Ohio, 28 Feb. 1832, daughter of John W. and Eliza Ann(Lucas) Starr and widow of Jesse H. Caton who d. in 1863;she d. in Corvallis 2 Oct. 1908 and was buried in the OddFellows Cemetery there. No children. 721. iii. William Willard, b. in Alstead, N. H., 14 July 1835. iv. Herman, b. in Alstead 30 July 1838. At the outbreak of theCivil War he responded quickly to the call to arms for theUnion, enlisting 29 Apr. 1861 and re-enlisting 15 May 1861,and on 5 June 1861 was mustered in as private in Co. G,Second New Hampshire Volunteer Infantry. On 13 June 1862he was promoted to corporal and on 25 June 1862 was shot atthe battle of Oak Grove called Fair Oaks, Va. The wardepartment records his death as 26 June at White HouseHospital, Va. In honor of his bravery as a soldier, the GrandArmy Post at Greenville, N. SEVENTH GENERATION 477 Headquarters, Herman Shedd Post No. 27G. A. R., New Hampshire, Mason Village, N. H. 26 July 1870.Mr. and Mrs. William Shedd,Langdon, New Hampshire. A post of the Grand Army of the Republic has been estab-lished at this place. The post is composed of soldiers and sailorswho served in the Army and Navy of the United States duringthe late rebellion and who received honorable discharge fromthe service. As a slight token of the high respect and esteem in whichyour son, the late Herman Shedd, was held by his late com-rades in arms, they, the members of the post, have by unani-mous vote adopted his name as the name this post shall beknown by as long as it shall exist. By order of the Post, Very respectfully,G. A. Hartshorn, Post Adjutant.v. Jonas Wallace, b. in Alstead 1
