Here he settled on some rich farming land whichhe industriously cultivated, and he became one of the most pros-perous farmers in the county. In 1871 he gave some of his land tothe railroad, on which a town was established which was namedShedd in his honor. He well educated his children, in 1874 waselected to the Oregon Legislature, and died at his homestead nearShedd, Ore., 15 Apr. 1892. He married at Rock Island, 111., in 1856, Emily Louise Olin,born in Hartford, Ohio, 5 Mar. 1828, daughter of Erastus andSarah (Jones) Olin; she died near Shedd, Ore., 26 Nov. 1884. Since 1909 he has also held the office of assistant stategeologist, Washington Geological Survey. He is a Fellow of theGeological Society of America, member of the American Insti-tute of Mining Engineers and other scientific societies.
