He married secondly, in Shenandoah, Iowa, 12 Apr. 1911,Lelia B. Anderson, born in Beverly, Ohio, 4 Feb. 1877, daughterof J. W. and Anna (Corp) Anderson. She died 24 June 1919. Children by first marriage: i. Paul Brown9, b. in New Castle, Ind., 13 June 1893; duringthe World War enlisted in the service and went to France;was discharged in October 1919, and is now (1920) studyingfor the ministry in the Presbyterian Theological Seminary,Omaha, Neb. ii. Philip Nelson, b. in Sioux City, Neb., 11 Aug. 1895; duringthe World War enlisted in the service; was dischargedj,inJune 1919, and is now (1920) studying for the ministry in thePresbyterian Theological Seminary in Omaha, Neb. a r DR. WILLIAM AMBROSE SHEDD EIGHTH GENERATION 675 764. REV. WILLIAM AMBROSE8 SHEDD, D.D. (543. Rev.John Haskell1, D.D., Rev. Henry6, D.D., John Haskell^, AbeV, Jon-athan7, Samuel2, Daniel1), was born 24 Jan. 1865 at Mount Seir,Persia, in which country his parents resided as Christian mission-aries from 1859 to 1870 and from 1878 to 1895. After graduatingwith honors from Marietta College, Ohio, in 1887, he spent twoyears in Persia, assisting his parents at the missionary station,and then entered the Princeton Theological Seminary where hegraduated in 1892. A few months later he again went to Persia asa Presbyterian Missionary, and to this work he devoted theremainder of his life, a period of a quarter of a century. Dr. Shedd made for years a scholarly investigation of Moham-medan problems, political, legal and religious, and he also studiedwith intense zeal the relations between Christianity and Islamismand the best methods of evangelistic approach to Moslems byChristians.
