Summary

[edit]
Description

On this day in 1875 Daniel Pollen became New Zealand’s ninth Premier and although he held this position for only 7 months, his legacy in New Zealand was quite significant.

Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1813, Daniel Pollen came to Auckland via New South Wales in late 1839, in time to witnesses of the proceedings at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. However, it was not until he moved to Kawau Island in 1847 and began contributing to the leading paper “The New Zealander” that his introduction to politics began. Whilst a contributor, Pollen made a name for himself as an outspoken and compelling man, supporting the agitation for responsible government, championing the Maori cause, and supporting temperance, scientific and library movements.

From 1852 when he became chief clerk in the Auckland Superintendent’s office to his death in 189, Pollen held innumerable positions in the New Zealand government some of which include: Member of Auckland Provincial Council, Commissioner of Crown Lands, Member of Legislative Council, Deputy Superintendent of Auckland, Superintendent of Auckland, Government Agent, Immigration Officer, Colonial Secretary, Native Minister and of course, Premier. Archives New Zealand as the official guardian of New Zealand’s public archives, hold a significant number of records which share a glimpse into Daniel Pollen’s considerable working life.

Displayed here is an engraved block depicting Daniel Pollen, from the Government Printing Office. This official portrait would have been used in government publications.
