characteristic vein of religious art, and, as it was painted nearly twenty yearsafter Mercy s Dream, affords a fair measure of the growth of his art. The picture represents avenerable man, with flowing beard, expounding the Scriptures with impressive gestures to twoyoung women. One of them, in sober garb, is listening with deep attention to his words. Theother, volatile and ostentatiously dressed, turns away from him to give her attention to somepassing object. The original sketch for this figure is reproduced herewith, and a wood engravingof the picture itself precedes Chapter First. The composition possesses less of the inspirationalquality which renders Mercys Dream so attractive. It is more labored, and less emotional; butthe color is more harmonious, and the texture or technical part perhaps more artistic. It belongs to a class of subjects quite popularat the time, representing as it does an ideal assemblage of the notable characters of theRevolutionary period. The arrangement of the numerous figures is felicitous, and the pose andcostumes of each personage are given with grace and elegance. In no work has the artist moreagreeably expressed the two leading characteristics of his brush. It is noteworthy that the faceof Schuyler was added after the picture was finished. This painting was exhibited at the greatSanitary Fair held in New York during the civil war; was afterwards sent to the ParisExposition of 1866, where it received the commendation of the judges; and was also exhibitedat the Centennial at Philadelphia.
