The popularityof the subjects he has selected caused many thousand engravings of his works to be distributedin the mansions of our cities and the farmhouses of our villages alike. Together with suchcompositions as Coles Voyage of Life, Wilkies Village Festival, Ranneys Trapper s Last Shot,or Landseers Challenge, they have tended to arouse a feeling for art in a new community.Reflecting in subject the opinions of the people and the age, they were yet sufficiently in advanceof the art knowledge of the people to be aesthetically improving, and therefore educational.
