orian of Kentucky, who unfortunately wrote itdown in his own formal style instead of in Danielssimple language. It was on the first of May, in the year 1769,the record begins, that I resigned my domestichappiness for a time, and left my family andpeaceable habitation on the Yadkin River, in NorthCarolina, to wander through the wilderness ofAmerica, in quest of the country of Kentucky incompany with John Finley, John Stewart, JosephHolden, James Mooney, and William Cooley. Weproceeded successfully, and after a long andfatiguing journey, through a mountainous wilder-ness, in a westward direction, on the seventh dayof June following we found ourselves on Red River,where John Finley had formerly been trading withthe Indians, and, from the top of an eminence, sawwith pleasure the beautiful level of Kentucky.Here let me observe, that for some time we hadexperienced the most uncomfortable weather as aprehbation (foretaste) of our future suffering. Perhaps theywere forgotten in the more severe afflictions tofollow. As they left the Clinch region, they crossedvarious smaller streams and lesser hills, and atlength they came into Powells Valley, lying at thefoot of the Cumberland Mountains, where nestledthe last white settlement of the frontier. Therethey found an old hunters trail which Finley knew,and this led them through Cumberland Gap tothe Warriors Path, a well-trodden way overwhich the Northern Indian war-parties came andwent in eastern Kentucky.
