Daniel's Answer to the King, attributed to Henry Ossawa Tanner, imitative of Briton Riviere's "Daniel's Answer to the King"

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Daniel's Answer to the King, attributed to Henry Ossawa Tanner, imitative of Briton Riviere's "Daniel's Answer to the King".

The attribution of this painting to Tanner comes from his name being painted/drawn on the back of the canvas. Comparing this to Riviere's painting, Tanner's painting lacks details found on Riviere's work, such as the decorations on Daniel's armband, and the patterns of brushstrokes on the lions' fur.

Tanner did not sign the work. No reasons have been given for its creation, so here are two, both speculation. 1) Tanner could have made this to make money before he became well known for his own work. 2) Tanner could have made this as a painting exercise during his learning process.

Undated; tentatively placing this in 1880s-1890s, the time when Tanner would have needed money and practice.
Date circa late 1880s-early 1890s
