Description

I think he was winning until I came along. The damselfly looked like it was caught in a spider web, but I think that was just part of the show. The spider was being eaten by the damselfly, and then I got tangled in the web too. Sydney flatwing (Austroargiolestes isabellae). Como NSW Australia, December 2010.

My identification leads me to think this is one of three possible damselflies: 1. Sydney flatwing (Austroargiolestes isabellae) 60% chance. Face markings correct. Some side markings correct, black patch on metepimeron is too long. Only 2 cells in the discoidal field between discoidal cell and subnodus (Austroargioleste should have more than 3).

2. Grey flatwing (Griseargiolestes griseus) 20% chance. 2 cells in discoidal field (=Griseargiolestes), face markings unknown, some side markings correct, including black patch on metepimeron

3. Common flatwing (Austroargioleste icteromelas)

20% chance.Outer face colouring correct. Only 2 cells in the discoidal field, black patch on metepimeron is wrong.
