Damascus National Museum Glorification of the Earth mosaic

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: This is the mosaic called "Glorification of the Earth". The persons on this mosaic are Greek deities. A woman, surrounded by small children with plates full of fruit, indicating the fertility of the earth. A man seizes a bull, symbolizing ploughing and agriculture. Four women to the left stand for the four seasons. On top and in the middle four heads represent the winds, blowing to the four directions. A painter to the right with water next to him is supposed to remind us man was made of mud and water. It dates from the third century AD.
