Summary
[edit]DescriptionDamaged bench mark on Stone Bridge, Saltney - geograph.org.uk - 1461063.jpg |
English: Damaged bench mark on Stone Bridge, Saltney. Granted, this perfectly round drilled hole doesn't look much like a bench mark, but its location in the centre of the north parapet of Stone Bridge just where a 1GL cut mark and bolt should be, is persuasive. Also I measured the centre of the hole as 14.5inches from the top of the parapet compared to the 1.21 feet recorded on the surveyor's schedule, which is 14.52inches. Clearly also the soft sandstone parapet has suffered, and is continuing to suffer, significant weathering and delamination, so I am convinced that this is all that is left of the early First Geodetic Levelling bench mark No79 on the Warrington to Pembroke Docks line. For a photo of the whole bridge parapet and the later bench mark at the end of the bridge see 1459265 |
