e panels being filled either with geometricalpatterns on a white ground or with inscriptions.The inscriptions are very numerous and curious, andgive a special character to the work. It is unusuallyinteresting to find one of them in Greek, side by sidewith others in Latin, a fact significant of the politicalposition of Grado on the borderland of Eastern andWestern Europe. A Latin V has crept in amongthe Greek letters, and they all, whether Greek orLatin, abound in grammatical mistakes and blundersof spelling. The principal inscription is that alreadygiven recording the restoration of the church bythe patriarch Helias (vid. sup. p. 415, Fig. 126).The purport of all the others is to record donationsof a part of the pavement, generally in pursuanceof a vow; and many of them state the number of feetincluded in the gift. Laurentius the Viscount Pala- ^ It has been ascertained that the mosaic floor is continuedunder the raised pavement of the present clioir as far as the eastend of the nave.
