The pala is in an imperfect state, most of thesilver plates which formed the background to thefigures having been lost, but fortunately all themore important parts are perfect. Before we leave the church there are some inter-esting sepulchral slabs in the floor which deservenotice. Within the choir is one with the figure ofa bishop holding a pastoral staff under a Venetianogee canopy, carved in low relief. Bound the slabruns a border of vine leaves and grapes, and a filletwith this inscription in Lombardic lettering:— SEPVLTVRA • REVEKENDI IN • XPO • PATRIS • ET • DOMINI •DOMINI • lOHANNIS DEI ET APOSTOLICE SEDI (s gratia)EPISCOPI VEGLENSIS • ORIVNDI • DE CIVITATE EADEM. This bishop John occupied the see at the end ofthe fourteenth century, and is mentioned in the L 2 148 Veglia : the Diiomo. (Ch. XXVI.
