Description
English: Diesel-hauled Down 'Cornish Riviera Express' on Dainton Bank.
View NE, towards Newton Abbot, Exeter and London etc.; ex-Great Western main line to Plymouth and Penzance. The 'Warship' Diesel-hydraulics had first appeared in 1958 and Dieselisation of the BR(WR) main line beyond Exeter had begun, but was not complete for another three years after I took this photograph of Type B-B No. D813 'Diadem' (built in 12/59) grinding - unassisted - up the infamous 2½ miles - in part as steep as 1-in-36 - of Dainton Bank. It just about made it to the summit.
