Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The DB 610 was effectively two V12 DB 605s fixed side by side but driving a single propeller and produced 2,860hp.

This example is from an He177A-5 of 4/KG 40 which was shot down on 12th June 1944. Flying at night from Toulouse, its mission was to attack allied shipping off Normandy using Henschel Hs 293 missiles. Before it reached Normandy it was shot down by Mosquito NF.XVII ‘HK459’ from 410(Canadian) Squadron flying from RAF Hunsdon near Harlow in Essex. Crewed by Pilot Officer L.J.Kearney and Flying Officer N.W.Bradford, the Mosquito was hit by return fire from the Heinkel and had to force-land on the beachhead with engine failure. The crew of the Heinkel successfully bailed out and the aircraft crashed vertically at Bolbec, France, and exploded. The crash site was excavated in 2012 with the engines and undercarriage parts being recovered. These are the largest remaining components of an He 177 and the only ones on display in the UK.
