Summary
[edit]DescriptionDa Gama Cross, 1497-1499 Cape Point 05.JPG |
English: A sign by the parks board at Cape Point Nature Reserve, Western Cape, that explains the meaning and practical function of the Da Gama and Dias Crosses. The padrãos were limestone pillars bearing the Portuguese coat of arms with an inscription stating when and by whom it was raised. The cross signified Portuguese sovereignty and Christianity. The current Dias and Da Gama crosses are however not original padrãos. The material and design of the originals are unknown, nor is it known exactly where they were erected. The current structures were erected in 1965. They commemorate Dias and Da Gama but also serve as practical beacons to assist ships in avoiding the dangerous Whittle Rock in False Bay. They are painted black on the seaward side so as to appear as silhouettes against the sky for the benefit of navigators. |
