Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In front of the Palmerston North City Council civic administration building (when approached from inside The Square) is this magnificent pou whenua known as "Hopwoods Pou". It pays tribute to European settlers and their contribution to the development of the city. It depicts European tools (saw, file, nails and bolts): symbols of technology and development.

Pou whenua, or pou, were traditionally used by maori as ownership or boundary markers and reflected the relationship between the ancestors, environment, and the reputation or standing of the tangata whenua, the people and the land.

It was commissioned by the Palmerston North City Council and the Rangitāne Maori Committee to mark the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1990. It is one of five remaining carvings of an original group of nine. The condition of this pouwhenua carving has deteriorated and a plan for possible replacement is being developed with Rangitāne.
