Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Nisga’a and Haida Totem Pole - Carved poles of Northwest Coast indigenous peoples such as the Nisga’a and Haida are historical monuments. The figures displayed on these poles, called crests, commemorate Nisga’a or Haida realities, specifically those of particular individuals, families or clans: their origins, rights, privileges, achievements, and experiences. Often reaching back into myth time, crests give form to cultural phenomena that are invisible or metaphysical in nature. The poles that grace the ROM’s main stairways came to the museum in the late 1920s and were erected in their present location during the construction of the Museum’s east wing which opened in 1933.
