Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The red-crowned crane (grus japonensis) is an endanger species and, despite what its Latin name may indicate, Japan is not its only habitat.

In fact, this beautiful, graceful bird with a patch of red on its head, spends the winter in Korea and China. It also lives in Manchuria, Siberia and on Hokkaido, the northernmost island of the Japanese archipelago.

The national bird of China, the red-crowned crane is on China’s list of protected wildlife species.

It symbolizes longevity and luck. This bird is considered a good omen.

Along with the phoenix, it is the bird that figures most in Chinese legends and paintings. It is nicknamed the “crane of the immortals.” The latter are deities in Taoist mythology often depicts riding on the backs of these cranes.
