Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Muskoxen are in the same family a mountain goats an bighorn sheep. They are social animals that live in loosely organized herds.

A soft underwool covered by a long outer layer of coarse hair allows the muskox to withstand extreme cold. This unique coat, along with its distinctive horns, gives the animal its iconic appearance.

In the arctic communities of the Northwest Territories, muskoxen remain an important source of meat for subsistence harvesters. The underwool - known by its Inuktitut name quiviut - is collected and woven due to its exceptional softness and warmth, which is often compared to cashmere.

Muskoxen crossed the Bering Strait into North America 90,000 years ago, but almost disappeared in the late1800s. Thanks to protection measures and reintroduction programs, their numbers have mostly recovered. Today, there are 100,000 muskoxen roaming the mainland tundra and Arctic Islands of Canada.
