The Atlantic puffin is the official bird of Newfoundland and Labrador. The province plays host to 500,000 of them. It is possible to observe them at relatively close range, on land or at sea. Males and females display their finest colours in the spring breeding season. Orange, yellow and blue bands encircle their beak, two yellow rosettes dot their face near the base of their bill, their eyes are highlighted with blue and red, and their legs are a bright orange. Couples build their nest in a burrow and spent several months shuttling out to sea to find food for their single chick. They mate for life and always return to nest in the same spot. The rest of the year, the hardy birds live out at sea. With its 29,000 kilometres of coastline and 350 species of birds, Newfoundland and Labrador truly is a bird lover’s heaven.
