Summary

[edit]
Description
English: In the early 20th century, there was a significant increase in traffic on the Grand Trunk railway network, as a consequence of which trains became longer and heavier. Faced with this increased demand, the company decided to build more powerful locomotives, introducing the 2-6-0 “Mogul”-type locomotive.

The Moguls accounted for 28% of the Grand Trunk’s locomotives when it merged into the Canadian National Railways in 1923. A third driving axle made it possible to increase motive power while supporting a larger boiler. This type of locomotive reflects the beginning of an era of specialization between locomotives used for freight (high traction) and those used to carry passengers (high speed).

Withdrawn in 1957, locomotive GTR 713 is one of the only vehicles of this category to be preserved in Canada today
