English: Dr. B. S. Chandalia was one of the most celebrated doctors in Rajasthan. He was a pioneer in the field of Plastic Surgery in Rajasthan under whose guidance the first plastic surgery department was founded in 1970 at SMS Hospital, Jaipur. It was his vision that helped the department grow to the heights that it is today. He started conducting plastic surgeries at SMS Hospital with only two beds allocated at the General Surgery Department in 1968 which led to the formation of the super-specialty department later. He was and still is a role model and inspiration to many.

Dr. Chandalia received the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) certification and became the first notable commonwealth scholar (1972-73) from Rajasthan in the United Kingdom. He successfully completed his medical training and returned to India. In 1975, with his envision the first Burn Unit was established in Rajasthan at SMS Hospital. During this time, he also operated on a critical cancer patient and successfully conducted the first breast cancer removal and reconstruction surgery in India. He not only saved the lives of many but also served selflessly. Thousands of people around the country will still be indebted to him for what he has done for them. He has been a visionary and ingenious doctor for the country. To his credit are many notable surgeries and operations which were first of its kind in the country. One of the most crucial accomplishments was the first Sex change surgery in India in the early 1980s which was appreciated by print and electronic media all over the country.

Dr Chandalia has been the recipient of many honors and lifetime achievement awards. He was the epitome of selfless service to humanity and a shining light to his admirers, friends, colleagues, students, and near ones.
